Fire Safety

Pics For Website269

A fire can start very easily and can spread with frightening speed. It is important that you know how to reduce the chances of a fire starting in your home and keep yourself, your family and your property safe from fire. Richard Williams have got everything from smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, fire security bolts, fire blankets, air horns and more.

Smoke alarms are essential as they provide vital early warning and allow extra time to escape if there is a fire in your home. You should fit smoke alarms on each level in your home, keep them dust free and test them once a week. You should always change the batteries in your alarm every year. We currently have smoke alarms ins tock from leading brand Fire Angel.

Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed in rooms with fuel burning appliances, such as boilers in kitchens and fires in the lounge. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, ensure your home has enough ventilation and that airbricks are not blocked, keep chimney flues free from blockages and never use a purpose-built or disposable barbecue indoors. Our carbon monoxide alarms are also made by Fire Angel.

A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish small starting fires. It consists of a sheet of fire retardant material which is placed over a fire in order to smother it. Due to it’s simplicity, a fire blanket may be more helpful for someone who is inexperienced with fire extinguishers. The fire blanket we have in stock measures 1.2 x 1.2mtrs and is suitable for small chip pan or kitchen fires and smothering a person whose clothes are on fire.

The Redlam panic bolt locks and secures single external fire exit doors from the inside without jeopardising a safe escape. In an emergency, the Ceramtube is broken with a small hammer chained to the Redlam unit, resulting in the panic bolt sliding back automatically and unlocking the door. The panic bolt can also be released by authorised personnel by removing a padlock (not provided) which keeps the Ceramtube in position. The MK1 Redlam unit is easy to install and use, and is supplied with one Ceramtube, but we keep replacements in stock too.

A new product to our fire safety range is the emergency air horn, suitable for use during fire drills and evacuations. The hand held air horn is a compact and portable device, with no need for batteries or mains electricity.
